The England star, who played his part in this year’s assault on the Six Nations, enjoys a friendly rivalry with Samoa’s Kahn Fotuali’i at Northampton.

The pair have shared the No.9 shirt this season, with Jim Mallinder doing his best to keep the duo fresh.

And that is certainly working for Dickson, who put in a sparky cameo appearance from the bench against Leicester last weekend.

“We’re fresh rugby wise but mentally it’s always hard because you’re itching to get on,” he said.

“But I am fresh, I feel very fit and when I came on at the weekend I did my job well.

“I really upped the tempo well and did exactly what I want to from the start of games.

“I’ve rested, me and Kahn are rotating well and hopefully going into the end of the season we’ll be firing.

And ahead of Thursday night’s Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final at Sale, Dickson added: “Me playing well gets the best out of him and him playing well gets the best out of me.

“We have rotated and it’s been nice to be brutally honest.

“You want to play in the big games, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the bigger picture.

“Sometimes you get half an hour and you try to make an impact for that time or you start and he makes that impact.

“You don’t lose anything when anyone comes on. That’s one of the biggest things for this club in the last 20 minutes - it’s adding so much rather than having to keep people on for the full 80 minutes.”
