Dickens sets sights on wrapping up positive LV= Cup campaign with a trophy

Assistant coach Alan Dickens says this season’s LV= Cup has been a hugely positive experience for Saints.

And he is hoping they can crown it with a final win against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

Saints have claimed victory in all five of their games in this year’s tournament, blending youth and experience to create a winning formula.

They have blooded a number of players who have gone on to step up to Aviva Premiership and Heineken Cup action.

And Dickens said: “The competition this year has been excellent for us and the players who have come through it’s been a real testament to the hard work they’ve put in over the years.

“Lads in the Academy, lads on the fringe of the first team and those senior players who play regularly in the first team mixing with those boys.

“It’s been really positive and pleasing to see.

“It’s been about giving players the opportunity to play and some have gone on to play in Heineken Cup games, Premiership games and that started from playing for the Wanderers on Monday nights and in the LV= Cup.”

Excitement is now building as the club prepares for the final appearance against an Exeter team buoyed by a last weekend’s semi-final success at Bath.

And Dickens is hoping Saints’ talented crop of players can finish the job to secure a first trophy since the success in the same competition back in 2010.

“There’s a lot of excitement,” he said. “Players go through their career and not everyone gets the chance to play in a final so you look forward to it.

“There’s a bit of excitement here at the club and in the town.

“It’s probably a bit of a cliché, but we go through the same process as any other game.

“That’s what we’re focusing on, but it’s got the added spice of being a final and we’ll see on Sunday.”
