White hails 'brave' Steelbacks as they stun Bears to set up last eight trip to Gloucestershire

Graeme White said no team will want to play the Steelbacks in the knockout stages after their back-from-the-dead win over Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston on Sunday.

Northants' season looked to be over as they crashed to 71 for six in the 10th over, chasing 192 to win.

But the Steelbacks turned it round, with Tom Taylor marking his club debut with an unbeaten 50, Rob Keogh hitting 37 in his first game of the season, and White topping it off with a quite stunning 37 not out from just 12 balls.

From needing 98 to win in the final eight overs, the Steelbacks got home with three wickets and seven balls to spare.

With Somerset being beaten by table-toppers Gloucestershire in a last-ball thriller, it meant Northants had finished as Central Group runners-up and will be in the quarter-finals - where they will travel to Bristol to play Gloucester on October 1.

"It was one of those games where you have to try and stick in there as long as you possibly can," said White of the County's remarkable fightback win.

"Before the game we spoke about how we would have to be brave throughout, because we knew it was a cup final for us and we had to believe until the last ball.

"I think with the group of players we have in this squad, that is our mentality.

"We haven't been at our best for the past few games, but I am pretty sure that if we can put all parts of our game together, not many teams are going to want to play us.

"It is all about being brave, hitting the ball in your areas and trying to hit it as hard as you can - that's what I was trying to do anyway!"

The win at Edgbaston brought to an end a four-match losing streak for the Steelbacks, and although there will be concerns that the top order batting failed to fire again, White was just happy to take his chance to shine.

"I don't uusally get many balls in an innings to be honest, and it just came off," he said.

"The first thing I said to Tom (Taylor) when I was out there was 'I am just going to try and hit everything, and if is in my arc I am going to try and hit it out of the park'.

"The first ball could have gone straight up in the air, but it came off.

"It is a great win for us, and I am really happy for everybody."
