The Australian batting all-rounder has been recruited for the Friends Life t20 competition, which opens on Friday, but he has been registered for the other two competitions and could also face Lancashire in the LV= County Championship early next month.

White will play tonight instead of David Sales, who missed the win over Sussex eight days ago but appeared in the two-day Championship defeat to Lancashire at Old Trafford last week where he was unable to break out of a poor run of form which has seen him fail to make a half-century in all cricket this season.

Speaking about White’s arrival, Northants head coach David Ripley said: It’s good news for us that he’s in.

“We investigated the possibility of this happening when Rob Newton got injured, and I’m glad that it’s all worked out.”

Another absentee will be Steven Crook who cracked a finger in the north west, and he will also miss the opening Twenty20 encounter with Gloucestershire on Friday.

And Ripley said that, with so much cricket to come, it wasn’t worth the risk to include him in the starting XI.

He added: “If it was a game where we could qualify then I think he’d play.

“We just don’t want to push our luck in the middle of the season and we’ll see where he is after this week.”

Andrew Hall was given a day off last time out in the YB40, but he returns to the 12-man squad and the duo of Ben Duckett and Lee Daggett keep their places.

David Murphy is likely to keep wicket with Duckett playing purely as a batsman in the middle order.

Northants from: Wakely, Willey, Coetzer, White, Spriegel, Duckett, Hall, Middlebrook, Murphy, Daggett, Azharullah, Keogh.
