Tanvir the latest to attract the County’s attention

In an attempt to end their search for an overseas recruit, Northamptonshire have now directed their focus towards Pakistani seamer Sohail Tanvir.

A deal is being worked out that would, should it come to fruition, see Tanvir, who has made exactly 100 international appearances across the three formats, available for six County Championship and eight Natwest t20 Blast fixtures.

There was also the possibility of Vernon Philander, the highly-regarded South African seamer, being made available but he would have only been around for four games so this has been discounted.

Speaking about the ongoing search for overseas reinforcement, chief executive David Smith said: “We’re pursuing (Sohail) Tanvir as we think he would definitely add something.

“Having another bowler would definitely help us as we’re a bit light in that area and he is an experienced cricketer.

“Also, to have someone else in for the Twenty20, even if it is for just half of the competition, is preferable.”

With regards to Philander, Smith added that it just wouldn’t be worth the hassle.

“For only four games it wouldn’t be worth going with and we simply can’t justify that kind of expense for such a short deal.

“As good a bowler as he is, we need a bit more than that so we’d rather go down a different route.”

Smith, without revealing any names, also said that the club are looking to bring someone in for the final five Championship games.

He added: “If all goes to plan we’ll be able to cover 11 out of 16 games which is as good as we’re going to get.

“Like every other club, we’d like someone here all season but that just doesn’t happen these days.”
