The deal means that the former Leicestershire player will be at the County Ground until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Cobb was named the County's white ball skipper midway through last summer, and said: “I’m very pleased to extend my stay at Northamptonshire.

“Last year we showed glimpses of what we are capable of in white ball cricket and I’m looking forward to playing some more of that positive cricket consistently.”

Cobb, who was man of the match in the Steelbacks 2016 T20 final win over Durham Jets, was the County's leading runscorer in the 2019 Vitality Blast, and was named the club's T20 player of the year - an award he’s taken home three times in the past four seasons.

He is looking forward to his first full season as the Stelbacks' one day skipper, and said: "They’re a great group of lads to lead and to see the graft they’ve been putting into upskilling with the coaches over the winter points to an exciting future."

Head coach David Ripley had no doubts Cobb would take the T20 and 50-over captaincy in his stride, and said: "Josh has always been a tactician of the game.

"We asked him to go about the leadership side of being captain and setting that bar for the squad with what he says and how he commands himself, and he really stepped up in that regard."

Cobb and the rest of the are still preparing to fly out to Singapore on Monday as preparations for the 2020 season ramp up.
