Not winning the “clutch moments” in games is costing the Steelbacks dearly according to head coach David Capel.
The 14-run defeat to Worcestershire on Saturday was the County’s fourth reverse in as many games and leaves them anchored to the foot of the Midlands/West/Wales division after half of their group matches.
And it was a similar story to Friday evening’s loss at Bristol with a solid effort in the field and with the ball not being backed up with the bat, a fact recognised by Capel.
He said: “The two games were quite similar.
“We looked vibrant in the field in both games and we also bowled well to restrict them to gettable totals.
“But losing wickets at the wrong times didn’t help us and they make a difference when the losing margins are so small.
“It’s about winning those clutch moments in games and this is what other sides have donw and we haven’t.
“These games often come down to small margins and if you take make the most of those clutch moments the results often take care of themselves.”
As was the case last season, it has been the batting side of the performances that have fallen short but the duo of Cameron White and Kyle Coetzer can be excluded from the majority of the criticism.
Both have made good contributions on a relaatgively consistent basis and Capel has been pleased with the way they have gone about their business.
He added: “Cameron has played well ever since he arrived and it’s been disappointing that we haven’t been able to give him the support to finish off games.
“Kyle has played well both going in first and in the middle order and we just need more of them to do the same.”
