The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year extension to his existing deal, meaning he will be staying at Wantage Road until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Rossington is the club's red ball skipper, but is very much a key man in all three formats of the game, and he is delighted to commit his future to a club he has been at since joining from Middlesex in 2014.

“I’m happy to have signed a new deal with Northamptonshire," said the Edgware-born batsman.

"These are exciting times being back in division one when it goes back to two divisions.

“We have a strong group of players with a good mix of youth and experience in the changing room."

Rossington led the County to promotion from division two in the summer of 2019, having taken over the reins mid-season from Alex Wakely.

The Covid-19 pandemic put paid to Northants' return to the top flight last summer, but there was still some first-class cricket played in the Bob Willis Trophy, which was played in August and September.

The skipper and head coach David Ripley decided to use the truncated campaign as an opportunity to give chances to the likes of Emilio Gay, Jack White, Ben Curran and Charlie Thurston, and Rossington was impressed with what he saw.

“Last year was a promising year, it was good to have a look at some younger lads in the Bob Willis Trophy so I’m pleased we took that approach to the competition," he said.

"It was a fantastic opportunity for players who hadn’t had much time in the middle to have a chance to show the fans what they’re about."

Rossington is set to lead Northants into another revamped County Championship campaign, with the 18 counties split into seeded groups of six, and they will begin their summer with a home game against Kent on April 8.

As well as focusing on the Championship, Rossington has also got his sights set on helping to excel in the Vitality Blast T20.

“It was positive making the knockout stages of the Blast last year after a mixed group stage, but obviously a pretty disappointing quarter-final performance in Bristol (where the Steelbacks were hammered by seven wickets)," he said,

"We’re hopeful that we can put that right this year and be at Edgbaston (for Finals Day) in September.

“We’ve got the squad now to challenge in all competitions, including a world class overseas singing in Mohammed Nabi for the Blast.

"It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Northamptonshire supporter.”

It's also an exciting time for Rossington on a personal level, because as well as being a key man for the County he is also part of the London Spirit squad for The Hundred, which will is launched this summer.

He will be joined in the Lord's-based team by Steelbacks team-mate Nabi.
