Significant improvement is a must for Peters

Stephen Peters says there are no “magic answers” to halting Northamptonshire’s form slump.

The County suffered an innings and 10-run defeat to Nottinghamshire this earlier this week, their third consecutive County Championship reverse, which leaves them rooted to the foot of the Division One table.

It was a poor display from the visitors and Peters acknowledged the fact that things have to change, starting with the visit of Middlesex this weekend.

“We’re just not playing well enough in all three departments, it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“We dropped Riki (Wessels) on 22 and he got 150, with the bowling we’re string well but not sustaining it and batting wise, we just can’t seem to bat for long enough periods of time.

“We have to do better in everything we do and I’ve got no magic answers as to how we’re going to turn it around.”

With a small squad, the option if ringing the changes isn’t really viable, but Peters expects the personnel to be altered slightly come Sunday morning.

He added: “There will probably be one or two changes for Middlesex.

“There are a couple of areas that need to be freshened up but we’re not in the position to make wholesale changes, especially in the batting where we’ve still got a couple of injuries.

“But those who do play know that what they do has to be better.”

Even though the glass is of the half empty variety at the moment, Peters believes there is enough time to turn things around.

“I was very disappointed after Trent Bridge but all we can take from that is the fact that there are 12 games left and plenty of points to play for.

“I still know we’re good enough to win games, we’ve just got to improve a lot to show that.”
