The 36-year-old , who is on a season-by-season deal with the County, needed to score 1,000 first-class runs for his contract to automatically get renewed.

He fell around 80 runs short of that mark but the club have decided to offer him fresh terms for the 2014 campaign which will see them performing in Division One of the LV= County Championship.

The club also officially confirmed, as we reported some weeks ago, that Sam Sweeney, Con de Lange and Christian Davis will leave the County Ground.

They are joined in the Wantage Road departure lounge by fast bowler Luke Evans.

Chief executive David Smith said: “Releasing players is always a tough decision.

“But players do get to an age when they need to be playing regular first XI cricket.

“We believe that Con, Sam, Christian and Luke are at this stage of their careers and had yet to claim regular first-team places.”

At statement from club added: “(We) can also confirm that it (the club) is in the market for a left-arm spinner, seam bowler and an overseas bowler.

“The players have been identified and head coach David Ripley is currently talking to those players.

“The club hopes to make an announcement shortly.”
