Ireland’s Sean Terry will also play a part in the clash in Cardiff, which begins on Wednesday, with David Ripley having to manage his squad ahead of next Tuesday’s NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final at home to Middlesex.

Ripley is keen to ensure his side produce a far better performance in the game against Glamorgan than they did in their defeat to Worcestershire last time out in the four-day format.

But with a number of players nursing injuries, he is eager to avoid risking them this week ahead of the T20 quarter-final and the Royal London One-Day Cup last eight clash the following week.

And Evans, who has made 52 first-class career appearances, averaging 33.67 runs, will provide able cover.

“We’ve had a lot of positives in white-ball cricket, but we played poorly in our last Championship game and we want to do much better this week,” Ripley said.

“We’ve got Sean Terry in and we’ve also brought Laurie Evans in on loan to help us with the injuries.

“We have got Josh Cobb, Adam Rossington, Richard Levi and Alex Wakely struggling so that puts us under the pump.

“We do care about Championship cricket and we do want to push for promotion, which won’t happen this year but is a desire of ours.

“We’ve got to manage our squad with the two quarter-finals coming up, but we do want to get away from the bottom of the table in the Championship.

“We’ll be pushing hard to be a promotion contender next season and we want to finish this season well in the four-day format.”
