The County missed out on Shahid Afridi, who opted against a return to the County Ground in favour of joining Hampshire for the summer.

And Northants were also unable to snap up 23-year-old South Africa batsman Quinton de Kock, who had also been on the wishlist.

But head coach David Ripley has confirmed that the Steelbacks are likely to receive a boost in the coming weeks with another bid set to come to fruition.

“We had quite a lot of dialogue with Quinton de Kock about coming but that didn’t materialise into anything unfortunately,” Ripley said.

“We have made an offer to another player and that’s alright. We’re not quite there yet, but we might have something on that fairly soon.

“We’ve made an offer, it seems to have been accepted but we haven’t had anything back yet from the contract we sent out. We’re getting closer.”
