Northants call off search for second overseas player for Twenty20

Northamptonshire’s hopes of securing the signature of a second overseas player for the upcoming Friends Life t20 have ended.

Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques was offered a short-term deal that would have covered six games of the group stage, but he has opted not to come to the County Ground.

And with all other avenues blocked, the club have decided that Cameron White will be their sole international addition for the competition.

And while he admitted to a feeling of disappointment, chief executive David Smith accepted that circumstances had got the better of them.

“Henriques isn’t coming as he’s just come off the back of an Australian A tour and wants a rest,” Smith said.

“We can understand where he’s coming from, but it’s a bit frustrating from our point of view.

“We don’t want to compromise and sign someone for the sake of it so we’ll be going with what we’ve got.”

This brings an end to a drawn out search for an additional overseas player, and Smith is glad that it has come to a close.

He added: “It’s indicative of the challenges that we face but that is just the way it is nowadays.

“The Champions Trophy, the Caribbean T20 and the work permit criteria have all combined to make it very difficult for counties.

“We’ve failed to convince Brendon McCullum, Shaun Marsh, James Franklin and Henriques to come here, so it’s not as if we haven’t been trying.

“We’ve just got to accept that we’ve been beaten by various factors this time around.”
