In a game shortened to 12 overs each after poor weather delayed the start by 100 minutes, the County thrashed 74 runs from their last six overs to post a total of 124-4 after being sent in and that proved way out of the visitors’ reach as they closed on 83-9.

And Wakely was delighted with what his side offered, saying: “If you could draw up a perfect 12-over game then that would be it.

“It was one of those performances where everyone did their job, everything went our way and that’s what a bit of momentum does for you.

“We’ve got a little bit of momentum from that game (on Monday) leading into the tournament but more from what we’ve done in the past, from the four-day stuff at the start and winning five one-dayers in a row.

“There’s a good feeling around the camp at the moment.”

The batting has been the side’s Achilles heel in previous campaigns but it did the job effectively and Wakely said it was an area they had concentrated on improving.

He added: “Even though we’ve not got off to good starts in the past, we’ve not been able to hit the sixes and boundaries in the last five overs of the game. That’s something we’re going to really try and focus on.

“I wasn’t too disappointed that we were batting because it was still enough time to build an innings and bat properly.”

The win sets up next Friday’s clash with Warwickshire nicely and Wakely is already looking forward to the encounter.

He said: “The Warwickshire game should be a really exciting one. It would be lovely to get a full crown in and I think it could be a high-scoring game.

“That weekend is very big for us against Somerset and Warwickshire. If we can come out of that with two wins we’ll be in a really good position.”
