Northants were once again left kicking their heels at Chesterfield on Monday as the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash against Derbyshire was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

David Ripley’s team were frustrated at the Queen’s Park ground on Sunday when the scheduled NatWest T20 Blash clash with Derbyshire was called off before it got started due to a wet outfield, and it was a similar story on Monday.

Although the ground was bathed in sunshine and the wicket playable, umpires Neil Mallender and Ian Blackwell were left with no alternative but to abandon play for the day shortly after a 12.30pm inspection.

The outfield is still saturated and the bowlers run-up at the Lake End were judged ‘too dangerous’ for the match to begin.

The players will return to the ground to try again on day two on Tuesday.
