Derbyshire and Northamptonshire were thwarted by rain as the Clydesdale Bank 40 match was called off at Derby at the halfway stage after the visitors had scored 232-8.

Kyle Coetzer and David Sales made half centuries against a Derbyshire side that rested their front-line bowlers ahead of this week’s crucial Championship game but off-spinner Peter Burgoyne took three for 31 to keep the home side in the contest.

The Steelbacks slipped from 140-2 to 189-6 and a fascinating chase was in prospect but the rain arrived during the interval and the match was called off before the Falcons could begin their reply.

Northamptonshire also rested players but an inexperienced Derbyshire attack was soon being dispatched to all parts of the County Ground with Rob Newton pulling consecutive balls from Matt Higginbottom for six.

Newton came into the game on the back of two centuries in last week’s Championship match against Derbyshire at Northampton and he made 31 off 17 balls before he cut Alasdair Evans to gully.

Ross Whiteley put down a return catch when Coetzer was on 26 and that threatened to prove costly as Sales joined him in a stand of 75 in 12 overs.

Coetzer pulled Alex Hughes for six to reach his half century off 66 balls and the Steelbacks had a formidable total in their sights at 140-2 in the 23rd over but the fall of three quick wickets checked their progress.

Chesney Hughes had Coetzer caught behind for 68 off 79 balls and Burgoyne held a stunning one handed return catch to remove Niall O’Brien for three before Christian Davis pulled the off-spinner to short midwicket.

But the big wicket came when Sales top-edged a sweep at Burgoyne and it was left to Con de Lange with 27 off 21 balls to take his side past 230.

Derbyshire would have fancied their chances of chasing down a target of 233 against a depleted attack but once again the rain had the last word and the umpires had no choice but to abandon the Group C match at 5.50 pm.
