The deal will see the town’s academic establishment become a shirt sponsor of the County with the club offering reciprocal arrangements regarding work placements in return.

Both Northampton Saints and the Cobblers have arrangements in place with the University and the club have worked over a long period of time to complete the triumvirate.

And chief executive David Smith admitted that it “ticks a lot of boxes” for both parties.

He said: “It’s a big part of our community based strategy and it’s a relationship we’ve been trying to get together for a while.

“I’m pleased that we’ve finally been able to get there and it’s a fantastic opportunity for us.

“We want to attract a good quality of sponsor and they want to promote their university so it works both ways.”

The signing of such a contract would indicate that the County’s stock is on the rise and this is a fact that Smith acknowledged.

He continued: “This comes on the back of a successful season and it shows that people want to be associated with us.

“It’s a strong commercial deal, both sides are happy with it, and it proves that we’re investing in the long-term future of the club.”
