If all goes to plan, the as yet unnamed player could be in the starting XI for this weekend’s LV= County Championship clash with Lancashire.

A few factors have to align for this to be the case but, as chief executive David Smith admitted, the club are in a situation where they can’t afford to sit on their hands.

He said: “At the minute we’ve got four batsmen – James Kettleborough, Rob Keogh, Ben Duckett and David Sales - out injured so we’d be silly not to look and see who is available.

“If any of them were fit to play then we wouldn’t be doing it as we’d rather play our own, but this would buy us some time.

“It would only be a short-term thing as we’re desperately short on numbers and especially light on the batting side.

“That’s the situation we’re in and we’re doing our best to try and rectify it.”

The County expect to hear whether their targeted player, who would have to join on a minimum one-month long deal, is available either late today (Thursday) or tomorrow.
