County have a few problems but 15-year-old Zaib shows his potential

The talented teenager, who does not turn 16 until later this month, made an unbeaten 54 against the students as the County suffered a few wobbles on a slow day.

The students resumed on 10-1 - some 308 runs behind the County - and struggled to make much impact with the bat.

They toiled their way to 114 all out taking some 66.2 overs to get there.

It meant the run rate for their innings was a dogged 1.71 as Maurice Chambers (17-7-27-3) and trialist Chad Barrett (17-6-39-3) got themselves in the wickets.

Leading by 204 on first innings, Northamptonshire took the chance for more batting practice - at least in theory.

Richard Kettleborough failed to follow up his 110 from day one and fell in the first over.

And he was quickly accompanied back in the pavilion by Kyle Coetzer (1) and David Sales (10).

Rob Newton and Ben Duckett also failed to make the most of the chance to spend time at the crease - an opportunity Zaib was not to pass up.

He had faced 70 balls at the close bringing up his half-century in the penultimate.

It meant Northamptonshire closed on 149-6, some 353 runs ahead.
