With Trent Copeland, who proved to be an inspred acquisition, unable to return as he doesn’t meet the necessary criteria to obtain a work permit, the County will be forced to look elsewhere.

With six months to go until the 2104 domestic campaign gets under way, it is still relatively early in the process but chief executive David Smith admitted that work is already being done to identify a suitable replacement.

He said: “It’s no secret that we’re looking for an overseas bowler and we feel that is the right way to go.

“It might be for only half a season because of other commitments but ideaaly we’ll get someone in for the majority of the summer.

“As things stand, we’re a few bowlers down and will need to reinforce that area and an overseas player will be crucial for us.”

Smith, and head coach David Ripley, have made known their preference for an Australian to fill the position and the former said that efforts would be concentrated on that part of the world.

He added: “The Australians haven’t got a heavy international programme next year after the Ashes has finished so that would help and not all of their bowlers will be going to the IPL.

“We’ve already got a couple of names that we’re following up who we feel would do a very good job and it’s a case of ensuring what we can offer fits in with their schedule.”
