Coetzer well aware of Steelbacks’ failings

Northamptonshire captain Kyle Coetzer wasn’t in the mood to make any excuses following the Natwest t20 Blast defeat to Worcestershire.

The Steelbacks came into the game with an unbeaten record but they were no match for the hosts who registered a convincing five-wicket victory.

The visitors posted an under-par total of 134-7 in their 20 overs which was romped past as the Rapids won with the best part of six overs in hand.

Coetzer commented: “We weren’t great in any aspect of that game.

“We were below par with the bat especially after an excellent start and we didn’t execute plans when we were bowling.”

And he acknowledged that it was with the bat where the game was lost.

A blistering start by David Willey and Rickard Levi came to nothing as the middle order faltered and Coetzer rued the lack of decent partnerships.

He added: “I felt that Worcestershire bowled really well in the middle of our innings and built a lot of pressure on us and we lost wickets at crucial times.

“The pitch was hard but you could see by the way they batted that it was possible.

“They got wickets at crucial times and when we felt we were going to go we just lost another wicket and that pegged us back and pegged us back and we weren’t able to get away from them.”
