Cobb, Rossington and Newton all hit half-centuries in Northants victory

Northants secured a comfortable five-wicket win against Loughborough University in the opening friendly of their pre-season tour to Barbados.

The County, who flew out to the Caribbean on Monday, took on the students at Windward Cricket Club, and eased to victory with more than five overs to spare.

Star men with the bat were Josh Cobb, Adam Rossington and Rob Newton, while the pick of the bowlers was Ben Sanderson.

Chasing a victory target of 268 Cobb led the way with 79 from 67 balls, smashing five sixes and seven fours, and he shared an opening stand of 89 with loan signing Max Holden (29).

Rossington and Newton took over and their fifth-wicket partnership of 122 settled the match with Newton hitting 50 from 50 balls before being dismissed, and Rossington finished on 78 not out.

Earlier, Sanderson claimed three for 42 from his nine overs as Loughborough made 267 for seven in their 50 overs.

Skipper Alex Wakely opted use a seven bowlers.

New signing Nathan Buck opened the bowling and ended with figures of none for 29 from eight overs, Holden took two for 34, another newcomer Gareth Wade one for 55 and Saif Zaib one for 56.

The County are back in action on Friday when they will take on Nottinghamshire at the same venue.
