Jack Brooks, who left the County Ground for Yorkshire after the 2012 season, took 5-36 as the visitors were dismissed for a paltry 94 in response to the hosts’ tally of 459-9 declared.

That left them with a deficit of 365 with two days remaining and they will resume on day three, having been made to follow-on, with a heavy reverse staring them in the face.

Only Matthew Spriegel, with an unbeaten 29, made much of an impression with the bat as Brooks, in collaboration with Ryan Sidebottom who weighed in with 4-16, had a field day.

Earlier, Gary Ballance had built on his first day score of 118 to reach 174 as the home side racked up an imposing total.

The County’s frustration wasn’t helped by an unbroken 10th wicket partnership of 61 between Steven Patterson and Brooks whose fun continued once he got his hands on the ball in the afternoon session.
