Back spasms rule skipper Wakely out of Championship match

Northamptonshire captain Alex Wakely has been ruled out of the current LV= County Championship match against Lancashire with a back problem.

He suffered some spasms during the journey back from yesterday’s Friends Life t20 game at Taunton - an encounter they lost by six wickets to Somerset - and had not recovered in time for the start of the four-day clash this morning.

Head coach David Ripley said: “Alex came in early this morning and wasn’t in great shape.

“He aggravated it on the field yesterday and saw the physio afterwards but it obviously wasn’t helped by a long bus journey home.

“We travel on the bus to let the players have a bit of a breather but sometimes it doesn’t really help.

“He’ll get his treatment this week and hopefully he’ll be fine for Sunday.”

It means David Sales will be in charge for the game and becomes the third person to lead out the side in the Championship this summer after Stephen Peters - the appointed first-class club captain who is out with a broken finger - and Wakely.
