The County started day three already well over 100 behind and with two centurions - Sam Hain and Jonathan Trott - returning to the crease.

Trott - on the day it was announced he had unsurprisingly lost his England central contract - added just 36 to his overnight 128 but Hain ploughed on.

Backing up the century he scored against Northamptonshire earlier in the summer, the 19-year-old emphasised his class by becoming the third-youngest man to make 200 in County Championship history. His fine innings eventually came to an end on 208.

A slog at the end saw Warwickshire lose wickets towards the end - with James Middlebrook profiting to finish with figures of 47-10-124-5 - before declaring on 573-9 with a lead of 300.

A swift end looked on when Stephen Peters (4) and Kyle Coetzer (5) fell early in the the County’s second innings but some defiance by James Kettleborough (25), Rob Keogh (26) and Adam Rossington (44) ensured they at least reached the close on 149-5 - still 151 in arrears.
