Justin Edinburgh hopes to convince Rene Howe that Rushden & Diamonds are the right club to kick-start his career again.
The former Kettering Town striker is set for a loan move to Nene Park having played 87 minutes in the midweek win over a West Bromwich Albion XI.
Howe, 23, has been put on the transfer list by Peterborough United three years after he was signed from the Poppies.
He also played in a pre-season friendly for Southend United following
loan spells at Rochdale, Morecambe, Lincoln City and Gillingham.
Diamonds boss Edinburgh said: "We wanted to bring him down here to see what we're about with the set-up and the way we play.
"We're looking to challenge in the right areas of the table this season.
"I'm sure he would like to stay in the Football League but we may be able to get him for a loan period.
"He showed glimpses of what he would bring to us.
"He has got a good touch but he hasn't played a lot of games.
"I will be speaking to him again and, hopefully, he has seen we've got talented players here and a great set-up. We want to do things the right way."
Howe was watched by Peterborough's director of football Barry Fry as highly-rated forward Lee Tomlin struck twice after Reuben Reid put West Brom ahead.
Howe was replaced by Sutton United striker Sam Gargan who has been recommended to Diamonds as "one for the future".
He also featured in last night's youth-team game at Banbury United.
Michael Corcoran and Lewwis Spence returned to action following injuries as Craig Farrell, Jamie Day and Max Porter again stepped up
their fitness by completing 90 minutes.
However Edinburgh revealed that Shane Huke (ankle) and Aaron O'Connor (thigh) are likely to miss the start of the Blue Square Bet Premier season at home to Fleetwood Town a week on Saturday.
Kurt Robinson, Sam Smith and Justin Miller could be back for Saturday's final friendly at Wingate & Finchley.
