A little boy who has cancer was treated like a VIP for the day when he helped relaunch a pub which has undergone a £270,000 refurbishment.

Zac Knighton-Smith, eight, of Rushden, and his family were invited to the town’s Needle & Awl pub in Northampton Road on Saturday for the event.

They were chosen because of the way they have coped with Zac’s illness and in recognition of their efforts to raise money for his treatment. The pub has also named them as its Family of the Year. General manager David Glazebrook said: “Zac and his family were the perfect choice. Zac shows such strength and his parents and extended family work tirelessly to drum up support and funds to ensure he gets the right treatment. The family more than deserve a little recognition and we were proud to welcome them as our VIPs.”

Following the relaunch there was a family fun day which included live entertainment for the pub’s young visitors.
