Youth custody rates are on way down

The number of young people aged under 16 being given custodial sentences has more than halved since 2007.

A report by the Northamptonshire Youth Offending Service to Northamptonshire County Councillors showed that in 2007-08 there were 99 youngsters in custody, but the latest figures from 2012-13 showed just 45 young people behind bars.

The county’s youth offending service has been putting its efforts into getting former offenders into work, training or education to help them change their ways.

They aim to reduce the figures further to below 45 in 2014.
