A year of success for new Kettering scout group

The group was established in September last year after the Brambleside Community Association decided they would like a Scout Group to provide fun and adventure for young people.

A spokesman for the scouts said that within a matter of days a number of adult volunteers had decided to take on the challenge.

Hannah Hammond, lead volunteer for the group said: “We thought we might get about 12 children turn up on the first night, but we had about 50 children attend. We were overwhelmed by the response but the great thing was that some of the parents volunteered to help with the sections.”

The group meets at Park School in Park Road, Kettering.

Aubrey, 6, joined the Beavers group in September. He said: “We’ve been to Pets at Home, a Sikh Temple, camping, the fire station, had a reptile evening and had a visit from a Paralympian.” When asked to sum up Scouting in three words he said, “fun, exciting, and excellent.”

Aubrey’s mum, Sarah said, “Aubrey has gained in confidence since joining Beavers and he looks forward to attending every week.”

Phoebe, a young leader aged 15 said, “Being involved as a young leader is great fun. I like the outdoor activities and we do lots of these with the Group. I have gained in confidence and this has helped me at school. The leaders treat me as a grown up and listen to what I have to say.”

Some of the Cubs recently attended the County Cub Camp at Overstone Park where more than 1,000 Cub Scouts from all parts of the County were celebrating 100 years of Cubs.

The Group will soon be getting involved in the “A Million Hands” project where the children will decide how they can support people in their local community.
