A town gym has been crowned independent trader of the year and is now in the running for the national title.

Fit4Her Ladies Boutique Gym has won the Wellingborough stage of the Independent of the Year competition and will go on to represent the town in the national stages of the contest, going head-to-head with some of the best-loved firms in the UK.

Voting for the contest took place on Facebook, with the gym getting 823 votes, 177 ahead of second place and 720 more than third.

Lauren Jackson, who runs the Market Street-based business with her sister Beth Jackson, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the local stage of Independent of the Year and are really looking forward to representing Wellingborough in the national finals. We hope we’ll do it proud.

“Our loyal customers have been amazing so far, voting for us in huge numbers, and we are asking them to do the same just one more time and give us the best possible chance of putting Wellingborough on the map. We have a lot to be proud of in our town centre and it would be fantastic to be named ‘top of the shops’ across the whole country.”

The Wellingborough section of the contest was organised by the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), an organisation which promotes the town centre through events and promotions.

BID manager John Cable said: “The girls have come a long way in a short space of time – they are a shining example of an independent trader at its best, offering excellent value, knowledge, expertise and customer service. We’re now calling on the good people of Wellingborough to get behind the gym in the national final.

The national competition will be held on Facebook, with the national winner being unveiled later this year.

Organiser of Independent of the Year, retail expert Corin Birchall, said: “Independent businesses are the life and soul of our high street, giving a sense of character to the area and helping to ensure money is kept within the local economy.

“This competition is a chance to champion what we have and showcase all that’s great about the modern British high street.”
