Met Office forecasters have now put THREE weather warnings in place as torrential rain and storms get set to hit Northamptonshire over the next 36 hours.

Alerts covering periods from noon until midnight today (Wednesday) and tomorrow, up to 9pm, were already in force.

But the experts are now warning of yet another belt of heavy rain overnight bringing the possibility of flooding.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Although some places will miss these heavy showers and thunderstorms, where they do occur they’ll be quite lively bringing torrential downpours with 25 to 35mm rain falling in an hour and a few places seeing perhaps 40 to 50mm rain in a couple of hours.

"Overnight, heavy rain may lead to some localised disruption lasting into the morning, followed by more slow moving, heavy showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon which could also bring disruption due to flooding in areas."

Rain, thunder and lightning hit parts of Northamptonshire at around tea-time yesterday, flooding roads and producing some spectacular sights in the sky as a storm headed through the north of the county.

Today's rain is likely to be more widespread and forecast to be heaviest at around 5pm with the west of the county, around the Daventry area, likely to be worst affected.

Away from the heavy showers and thunderstorms there will be some bright spells this week and it’ll feel warm in the sunshine, with temperatures into the low-20s.

But the only good news — unless you're a keen gardener — is another spell of warm weather looks to be on the horizon.

Local weather-watchers Northamptonshire Weather tweeted: "Temperatures staying in the low twenties over the next few days but some models are showing a chance of temps rising to 30°C as we head through next week."
