Met Office forecasts say thermometers will hit 19° on Friday, 20° on Saturday before dropping to a chilly 9° on Sunday.

And will feel like FREEZING at times thanks to strong winds blowing down from the Arctic.

BBC weatherman Matt Taylor said: "Big temperature swings aren't desperately unusual at this time of year but certainly there's going to be some big changes ahead later this week.

"During the next two days the warmth is building up and VE Day on Friday could see temperatures in the high teens or low-20s.

"Through the weekend, though, there comes a surge of arctic air returning and some of you will struggle to get into double figures.

"Rain spreads from north and temperatures could drop by up to 12 or 13 degrees as we go through Saturday afternoon into Sunday."

The traditional first May bank holiday was moved to Friday so the UK could enjoy a series of events to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, celebrating the end of World War Two.

Coronavirus lockdown laws to combat the deadly bug have forced public celebrations to be scrapped, including more than 20,000 pubs countrywide encouraging drinkers to toast the heroes of the War and church bells Ringing Out For Peace.

Now Northamptonshire is being encouraged to mark the occasion by staying at home, although many will still be keen to get out for afternoon tea in the garden or their daily exercise, rather than a street party with entertainment strictly on TV on online.

The May Day bank holiday has only been moved once before, back in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of VE Day.
