Met Office experts have issued yellow warnings for snow and ice as Northamptonshire faces a big freeze from tonight until Sunday.

They say bands of rain will cross the country and could turn readily to snow as it spreads eastwards — although forecasters are hedging their bets on how much will fall.

The first warning comes into force at 4pm on Friday until 10:30am tomorrow morning. A second covers all day Sunday from 3am until 6pm in the evening.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: "It's going to stay cold over the weekend as temperatures drop to below freezing tonight — even in town centres — ice is set to return and there is the continued risk of snow in some places across the Midlands and into East Anglia, as well.

"There's the likelihood of more wintry weather on Saturday with a mixture of sleet and some snow and a very cold night on Saturday night.

"Then there's a bank of wet weather which starts to push in on Sunday, and that's giving us a few headaches over exact timings and how it interacts with cold air will determine how much snow we see, maybe spreading into the Midlands during the course of the day."
