Volunteers praised for helping homeless people in Corby and Kettering at Christmas

About 40 people went out on two nights just before Christmas to offer support to anyone sleeping rough on the streets of Corby, Kettering and the surrounding areas.

They gave up their time after an appeal for volunteers by the Candle of Light Christian Spiritual Church in Corby to go out on December 18 and 19 to take out warm clothing, bedding and food to anyone in need.

Dennis Binks from the church said: “We had about 40 people turn up and we found people all over the place when we went out in Kettering and Corby.

“It was brilliant.”

Mr Binks said they handed out a lot of sleeping bags, clothes and food over the two nights, especially in Corby where he said they found quite a few people living rough.

He added: “It was a busy weekend but hopefully we brought some love and light to them.

“We spoke to them and gave food out.

“The volunteers were really nice people.

“I think it was a good opportunity to help others and it went well.”

Mr Binks has now turned his attention to helping other people in the community as he looks for volunteers who would be happy to go in and spend time chatting with people in care homes who do not usually get many visitors.

He said: “I want to find people to go into the care homes.

“Please contact me if you are interested.

“I just think it is a nice thing to do.”

Mr Binks is hoping to get a rough idea of how many people who would like to volunteer before he contacts care homes in the area to set up the visits.
