Volunteers needed for Kettering speedwatch campaign

Cllr Anne Lee (Lab, Pipers Hill) has set up the initiative, which sees community members use speed detection devices on vehicles.

To get it up and running she needs 10 volunteers – but still needs three more helping hands.

Cllr Lee says tackling speeding in Kettering is an important issue.

She said: “I am passionate about getting this scheme off the ground.

“There is nothing like the sight of people in high-vis jackets brandishing a speed gun to make drivers think twice about tearing around Kettering at excessive speeds.

“We intend to check speeds in as many different locations around Kettering as possible, to show that we want to make Kettering a safer community where speeding is not tolerated.

“The more volunteers who join the scheme, the more speed checks we can carry out.”

Cllr Lee says areas of particular concern include London Road, St Mary’s Road and Pipers Hill Road.

She added: “It’s a serious problem and there are more rat runs in the town now.

“It surprises me that not many accidents are happening.

“Inconsiderately parked cars are also causing a problem.”

The scheme has support of Kettering Council and will be twinned with a similar scheme in Burton Latimer.

Evidence collected can be used by the council in any discussions with Northants County Council over possible traffic-calming methods.

A training day for volunteers will be held on April 29.

The group will get the equipment for three weeks during a six-week period starting in mid-May.
