A man who spent many years writing for the Telegraph has died at the age of 93.

Doug Sturgeon was the Down Your Way correspondent for Irchester for many years and was a regular visitor to the newspaper’s Wellingborough offices in both Sheep Street and later Pebble Lane.

Mr Sturgeon, who loved horse-racing, died earlier this month in hospital. He was a retired flight lieutenant who learned to fly at Sywell Aerodrome in 1940.

Irchester councillor Tim Maguire knew Mr Sturgeon well and said: “He was the correspondent for the Telegraph for many years. He always knew what was going on in the village.

“He knew a lot of things and a lot of people, we shall miss him.”

Mr Sturgeon’s funeral is being held at St Katharine’s Church, Irchester, at midday on Monday, December 2.
