The van’s owner, who did not want to be named, said the incident had left him frustrated.

He said: “About a month ago my garage was broken into and I’m thinking of giving it up.

“It’s so frustrating because I’m just left powerless and can’t do anything about it.

“He was an opportunist who smashed the window with a flat-headed screwdriver, but I think he was spooked so came back about half an hour later.

“I’m married with a young daughter and if he’d taken something like tools, I would have been unable to work.”

THe victim told the Northants Telegraph that a torch was taken from the passenger seat, although a Northants Police spokesman was unable to confirm this.

Witnesses or anyone who may have seen anyone in the area acting suspiciously at the time should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
