Former The Bill star Mark Wingett has helped launch Northamptonshire Police’s Christmas drink-driving campaign in Kettering.
Wingett, who played Det Sgt Jim Carver in the ITV police drama, gave his backing to a police initiative to increase their presence on the county’s roads in the build-up to Christmas.
Police made 17 arrests for drink-driving in the first week of December, compared to a total of 103 for the whole of December 2013.
Wingett, who is starring at this year’s Lighthouse Theatre pantomime Aladdin, said: “I am here supporting Northants Police because if I can just stop one person getting injured or somebody getting arrested during the Christmas period because of drink-driving I think that’s a very worthy thing to do.
“I think my character got tested a couple of times, which he failed, unfortunately, and I just hope that doesn’t happen to any members of the public.
“I am completely happy to be here and I give police my full support.”
The Christmas clampdown is part of the police’s Futures Programme, and the force’s Chief Insp Dennis Murray said: “We are here today stopping members of the public and checking to see if they’ve been drinking and driving, and giving them advice about drinking and driving.
