VIDEO: Kettering Filipinos aid typhoon fundraising

Filipino families in Kettering are appealing to people to support a fundraising effort for the British Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Appeal.

About 40 members of the local Filipino community are holding a fundraising event at St Edward’s Roman Catholic Church in London Road, Kettering, on Saturday, November 30, from midday to 5pm.

They are appealing for local people to attend the event – which will include raffles, stalls, bric-a-brac, food and drink, and activities for children – and also to donate to it – either as a cash donation or an item for sale at the event.

Fundraiser Allan Contreras, a nurse at Kettering General Hospital, said: “In the Kettering area there is a small Filipino community, many of whom work at Kettering General Hospital, local nursing homes or in the local retail industry.

“We are a close community and we were all very shocked by how severe Typhoon Haiyan was and how much damage it has done.

“Fortunately most of the community’s families in Kettering have not been directly affected by the disaster.

“However, clearly we are all very keen to support our home country in this time of great need.”

All of the money raised from the event will go to the Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Fund which is supporting the Disaster Emergency Committee’s response to the disaster.

Anyone who wants to contribute a donation, of either money or items for sale, can contact Allan on 07513 814937.
