Unsung heroes who make a difference in the community are set to be recognised with the first ever Higham Ferrers Mayor’s Awards.
Town mayor Richard Gell will be presenting the inaugural mayor’s award for services to the Higham Ferrers community after seeing similar schemes in other areas, including Rushden and Raunds.
He wants to recognise the people who go the extra mile to help others and make a difference in their community.
Cllr Gell said: “It’s something we haven’t done before and is something I have instigated.
“Rushden and I think Raunds also do it so I wanted to start it off for Higham Ferrers along similar lines and I hope it continues.
“It’s for the unsung heroes and volunteers because there are people out there who have been running clubs, groups and organisations in the background for many years.”
The mayor’s award will be given to an individual volunteer for their work and commitment within the Higham Ferrers community.
Cllr Gell has been involved in the community throughout his life, including with sports clubs in the town, with the church and as part of his role as a town and district councillor.
He said: “I want to hear about anybody involved in volunteering for the community.
“These volunteers are there but you don’t always know about them, it’s these sort of people that I am after.”
Group nominations are not eligible, although an individual can be nominated for their work for a group, club or organisation in the town.
As it is the first year of the mayor’s awards for the town, nominations do not need to be limited to just the past 12 months, it could be someone who has been volunteering for a number of years and should be recognised for their contribution.
If you would like to nominate an individual for an award, send the name and address of the nominee as well as the reason for their nomination to the town clerk at Higham Ferrers Town Council, Town Hall, Market Square, Higham Ferrers, NN10 8BT.
Nominations can also be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The closing date for nominations is Friday, March 4.
The winner will be announced at the council meeting taking place on Tuesday, April 26.
