Two people rescued after fire at Corby care home

Two residents were rescued from a Corby 52-bed carehome in the early hours of this morning.

At 2.50am, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a fire at Shire Lodge Nursing Home in Rockingham Road, Corby.

A spokesman said: "Four fire engines were immediately mobilised and were in attendance within minutes – two from Corby, and one each from Kettering and Desborough fire stations.

"At the scene, fire crews were faced with smoke and heat and immediately deployed firefighters in breathing apparatus with high pressure hoses to search for residents and extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters worked quickly to search through the smoke logged building to rescue two residents from their bedrooms and brought them to safety, carrying out first aid before they were conveyed to hospital.

"Another resident suffering from smoke inhalation received treatment on the scene from paramedics."

Incident Commander, Station Manager Dan Retter, said: “Due to the swift response and action by fire crews we were able to quickly search the care home and extinguish the fire after making two rescues.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Andrew Barker, operations manager for Birchester Care Group Ltd that own Shire Lodge Nursing Home, said: "Everybody is fine. We've had one lady taken to hospital for observation.

"The fire alarm went off and staff followed the proceedures. There is smoke damage in one room.

"Staff reacted well to the situation and at 2.45am they did a side and vertical evacuation where the rooms either side and above the room were evacuated."

Corby Fire Station said on their Facebook page: “Crews did an outstanding job in a truly difficult situation” said one of our Station Commanders about your fire crews from Corby, Kettering and Desborough.

"Early this morning, two crews from Corby, supported by Kettering and Desborough stations attended a report of a building fire in a residential building.

"We understood that people were trapped in the blaze.

"Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued two casualties from the building and handed them over to crews from East Midlands Ambulance Service.

"A number of other residents were evacuated from the property and were not injured during the incident."
