Fundraiser John Roberts triumphed in a triathlon after he lost 24 stones in weight, and helped raise £5,000 for a cancer charity.

He joined friends Jon Stonebridge, Shona Fullerton and Simon Murphy in the Blenheim Park Triathlon on Sunday in support of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

The team from World of Bikes in Princewood Road, Corby, competed under the name Team WOB after months of training.

They entered the event after Jon’s mother Jane,of Cranford, was diagnosed with non-hodgkin’s lymphoma in July last year.

She is now in remission thanks to the care she received from Dr Mark Khan and the haematology team at Kettering General Hospital.

It was all four’s first marathon and Jane and family members were there to cheer the team on.

Simon, 36, who works at World of Bikes with John, said: “We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us.

“We took part for Jon’s mum and for John who has lost so much weight.

“We’ve been training for months at Corby Park Run in West Glebe Park and at Uppingham Sports Centre.

“We all loved taking part in the triathlon. Although it left us with a few aches and pains, I think it’s fair to say that we are all up for doing another.”

Mrs Stonebridge is a keen artist but during her treatment had to give it up.

Since being told she is in remission she has taken up painting again and anyone who donates to Team WOB will go into a draw to win a picture from her.

Jon, 36, said: “On our Virgin Giving page, you can see mum doing the painting and in the photos section you can see the finished article.

“It is the first artwork she has done since her treatment.

“Pretty much a year ago, she couldn’t even stand up by herself, now she is back up on her feet, almost back to normal and producing art which she loves doing.

“If it wasn’t for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research mum wouldn’t be here to have painted the picture. No ifs or buts, she wouldn’t be here.”

Matt Lawley, running and triathlon manager at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said: “We are constantly inspired by the stories of those taking part in events for the charity and the dedication of our supporters like Team WOB.

“Every penny raised for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research will help us in our mission to beat blood cancer – stopping people from dying and making patients’ lives better.”
