Up to 1,000 more students could attend a college in Wellingborough from 2015 if plans to re-develop the building are given the go-ahead.

Tresham College is currently in the process of applying for funding from the Skills Funding Association.

Wellingborough Council is supporting the bid by the college, and the local authority’s planning committee will decide whether to approve the building application.

Councillors and council officers were recently shown the latest plans for the proposed development.

Cllr Barry Graves said: “It’s a fantastic design. I was amazed because they have got to this stage very quickly. They will be able to have up to 1,000 more students.

“A lot of work has gone in to it.”

Steven Wood, head of planning and local development for the council, said: “We saw the plans for the new college. It’s moving forward quite rapidly. It represents a real opportunity for Wellingborough. Hopefully it will be a catalyst.

“They hope the first students will start at the new college in September 2015.”
