The A6 has been closed in both directions after an overturned lorry shed its load near Rushden.

Police have closed the A6 Rushden Bypass between the A5001 John Clarke Way junction and Newton Road junction in both directions after the lorry overturned at 10.10am today.

A police spokesman said the driver was uninjured in the accident, but diesel has been spilt on the carriageway as well as bonemeal which was being transported by the lorry.

The fire service and police are in attendance.

There are delays in both directions due to the incident, including tailbacks along Newton Road.

Police have said the road could be closed for several hours while the scene is cleared so drivers are being asked to find alternative routes where possible.

The accident comes just a few weeks after a lorry shed its load of huge rolls of paper on the A6 carriageway on February 21, which also led to delays for drivers.
