A multi-vehicle crash shut the M1 northbound in Northampton on Thursday lunchtime.

Highways England say the carriageway is closed at Junction 15 with diversions in place through the town back to Junction 15A.

A chemical tanker is among the vehicles involved.

Emergency services did manage to open one lane past the scene at around 12.30pm to free trapped traffic but advice is to avoid the area until at least 3pm while the clear-up operation continues.

Traffic cameras are showing heavy traffic on the A45, Mereway and Danes Camp Way as traffic battles through.

A HIghways England spokesman said: "All emergency services, Traffic Officers and contractors are working at the scene in a response being led by Northants Fire & Rescue Service.

"There is queuing traffic back towards J14 for #MiltonKeynes. Please allow extra time for your journey today or seek an alternative route if possible.

"If you cannot find an alternative route, road users are advised to follow the "Hollow Square" diversion symbols from Junction 15 for Northampton to Junction 15A."

Queues of around two hours back to Junction 14 Milton Keynes are being reported on the approach to Junction 15.
