Two HGV lorries were reported to be involved in the smash at around 9.30am, with one of them overturning.

Lanes one and two remained closed northbound at around 11.30am and Highways England are warning of long delays in the area well into the afternoon.

A spokesman said: "There is approximately seven-and-a-half miles of congestion on the approach northbound to this M1 incident. Please add an extra 60 minutes onto your journey time."
