Finally, Northamptonshire is set to get warmer...but watch out for freezing rain, first

Weather watchers can finally see an end to the three-week big freeze across Northamptonshire.

Met Office forecasts predict daytime temperatures continuing to hover around or just above zero until Sunday -- with a windchill making it still feel like MINUS 10.

After days of snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures it finally starts to warm up on Monday, although the trade-off for thermometers reaching a toasty ten degrees will be some rain.

Before that, though, ice and freezing rain could be a real danger over the weekend.

Met Office forecaster Aiden McGivern said: "Freezing rain is a relatively rare phenomenon in the UK but it can be very hazardous.

"Deep cold air is fairly well entrenched across Central and Eastern England. So with the milder air moving in from the west on Sunday, above the surface snow will fall as rain but closer to surface it will hit the cold air again.

"There is a risk that rain will become so chilled that it will freeze on impact with the ground and turn places into ice rinks, particularly in Central and later on in Eastern England."

Temperatures bottomed out at a chilly -4.4°C at the Met Office weather station at Pitsford School on Wednesday morning this week with a windchill of -7.8°C.

But this did not come close to the lowest numbers recorded there — MINUS 13.0°C on February 11 nine years ago and -14.8°C windchill on February 28, 2018.
