UPDATE: A605 route out of Northamptonshire likely to be closed for seven hours after crash

A serious crash shut the main route between Northamptonshire and Peterborough during the morning rush-hour.

Fire crews from Oundle, Thrapston and Northampton rushed to the scene of the collision, reported to involve a lorry and a car, on the A605 near Oundle at around 5.30am on Thursday (January 23).

Emergency services closed a three-mile stretch both ways between Well Lane, Barnwell, to the A427 Station Road.

And police warned the road may remain closed until 2pm while recovery and investigation work is carried out.

The A605 connects the A14 and A45 at Thrapston with the A1 and Peterborough.

Diversions were in put place but two-mile rush-hour queues built-up and Northants Highways issued a warning to drivers to find alternative routes.

Bus operator Stagecoach also reported major delays to their X4 service between Northampton, Wellingbrough, Kettering, Corby and Peterborough.

A spokesman said: "We are currently having to divert via the A47 meaning we are unable to serve The Benefields and Oundle at present."
