Thrapston boss Walker hoping for some cup joy

Ian Walker is hoping Thrapston Town can put together some good runs in the knockout competitions this season.

The Future Lions United Counties League Division One side are in second-round action in the NFA Junior Cup this weekend when they take on Northants Combination Premier Division side Spratton at Chancery Lane.

But Walker insists he and his team, who beat another Combination side Woodford United 2-1 in the first round, will be taking nothing for granted as they bid to make progress.

“We want to do well in every competition we enter but the Junior Cup is always one that you want to have a run in,” he said.

“We are still in the UCL Knockout Cup as well so we would like to go as far as we possibly can in both competitions.

“Spratton are a Premier Division side in the Northants Combination and they will see us as a bit of a scalp.

“I have had enough exits from the Junior Cup to know that nothing is guaranteed and you can’t take anything for granted.

“We certainly won’t be taking them lightly and we will have to perform well to get through.”

Thrapston are sitting in mid-table in Division One after they drew 2-2 with Long Buckby at Chancery Lane on Tuesday night.

And Walker has been content with his side’s efforts so far in what he believes is a “strong” division.

“It’s been a bit up and down if I am being honest,” the manager added.

“Division One is looking particularly strong this year with a lot of new sides in there.

“We have made a few of the trips to play teams from the Leicester area and we haven’t done too well against them.

“We are having to make changes week by week and that’s the nature of it these days.

“Our home form has been the most pleasing thing but we have struggled away.

“It is a difficult league but are sitting in mid-table and we are doing okay so far."
