The joys and benefits of cycling will be showcased in a summer-long festival which aims to encourage people to consider choosing two-wheeled transport over four.
Northamptonshire County Council has helped organise the Summer of Cycling celebration which is made up of a number of cycle-themed events throughout the county.
Regular cycling brings health benefits through exercise but other pluses come through cutting congestion on the roads therefore reducing pollution.
Cllr Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for infrastructure and public protection, said: “The Summer of Cycling is all about celebrating all that’s good about cycling and the huge amount of benefits it brings, from health and well-being to the environmental advantages.
“Cycling is also a very cheap mode of transport and travelling by bike can hugely reduce commuting costs for many.
“What this festival does is demonstrate how easy it is to get into cycling and taking those first few steps into using it as a method of travel.
“Members of the public are encouraged to bring their bikes along to each of the events to take part in a range of activities with the chance to win some great prizes.”
Summer of Cycling starts this week with The Big Bike Fix event – where the county council has teamed up with local independent bike shops across the county to offer free bike safety checks for Northamptonshire people.
While the main festival events starts with the Daventry Cyclefest on Saturday, June 23, which is being run in association with Daventry District Council.
Other events include Corby Celebration of Cycling on Saturday, June 30, Wicksteed’s Wonderful Wheeled Weekend on Saturday, August 4, and Sunday, August 5, and Northampton Celebration of Cycling and Connect 2 cycle-route launch on Saturday, August 11.
